ray carmine (he/him) is a "sailor" (pirate captain) who found vesper when they were little, and took care of them. he and vesper are still close (he's somewhere between an adoptive father and an older brother figure to them), but now that vesper is older, they live seperately, though ray is often writing them letters. for some reason, he hasn't really been doing so lately. he wouldn't just do that... ray still lives out at sea for most of the year due to his work as a sailor, but occasionally he's able to visit vesper at their library.

ray is a normal cat, no magic or anything, but he is very strong and fast. he has long coral and white fur with stripes, and rarely ever goes anywhere without his tricorn hat, worn to the side so that it covers up his ear. this is because his ear was torn in a fight with some other pirates when vesper was little. not wanting to alarm them once his ear had healed all it was going to, ray decided to wear his hat like that always. as his scary pirate persona, he also wears a reddish scarf fastened with a blue gemstone brooch from which a key dangles, and he also will carry a knife fastened to his hind leg. ray can seem aloof and intimidating to those who don't know him, but he's actually very caring. he usually has to hide that side of himself in order to maintain his reputation as one of the most feared pirate captains of the roaring sea. having such a reputation keeps his crew and others he cares about safe, so he sees it as very important.
